The number of fatalities from the Monday night collision between a bus and a truck carrying cash-in-transit in the Limpopo region of Vhembe has increased to 21. The collision wounded almost 60 persons.

According to Florence Radzilani, MEC for Limpopo Transport and Community Safety, the bus had been carrying passengers from Makhado to locations around Nzhelele, Siloam, and Tshikombani.

The cash-in-transit van’s driver reportedly lost control of it while passing another car, which is how the two vehicles came to crash. After then, the bus fell from the highway bridge into the river below and came to rest on its left side.

Ross Campbell, a representative for ER24, said that the majority of those killed were pinned beneath the bus.

To make sure nobody had been washed away in the river, police divers were sent to the site.

When the grieving relatives identify the bodies of their loved ones on Wednesday, Radzilani, Deputy Transport Minister Sindisiwe Chikunga, and Vhembe District Mayor Dowelani Nenguda are anticipated to be there to support them. They will then go to the crash site.

According to Radzilani, the government will offer free counseling as well as help to the victims’ relatives.
