Former South Africa captain retires from international cricket aged 29

Dane van Niekerk, a former captain of South Africa, has resigned from international cricket at the age of 29 after being omitted from the team for the Women’s T20 World Cup last month owing to physical issues.

After participating in 197 matches across all formats for the national teams, Van Niekerk announces the end of her career.

“I announce my retirement from international cricket with profound regret,” she stated.

“I cherish the wonderful memories I have from my career and want to express my gratitude to Cricket South Africa and all other stakeholders for their support. The road is frequently emotional, unpleasant, and lonely, but I wouldn’t trade it for anything. I appreciate everything this game has given me.”

After failing to meet fitness requirements, the all-rounder was left from South Africa’s squad for the Women’s T20 World Cup on home soil.
