The City of Joburg Mayor Thapelo Amad has cautioned motorists and pedestrians to be responsible on the roads this coming Easter to avoid unnecessary accidents which may lead to fatalities.

Amad was speaking during the launch of Public Safety Department City’s Easter Safety Campaign in Woodmead today.

He said his aim is to make it possible for the City of Joburg to be a safe space at all times.

“Today officers must do their work to make sure that both motorists and pedestrians are safe and everyone reaches their destination in a safe mode,” he said.

Ahmad said the officers must also do their work accordingly so wrong doers can be punished.

“Fix your problems as a motorist and as a pedestrian should you be found on the wrong side of the law, the officers who are here will ensure that you are penalised and no one will escape as long as they have committed any wrongdoing or any criminal offense,” he added.

The Member of the Mayoral Committee for Public Safety Mgcini Tshwaku said the police visibility will from now on increase.

“We also encourage everyone that has licenses, that need updating, that have expired, a vehicle disc that has expired and all those cars that are not roadworthy, they must go to our licensing centres and be tested,” Tshwaku said.

Starting from today, there will be rolling roadblocks everywhere in the City of Johannesburg.

The operation aims to encourage the public to renew their vehicle license discs, renew their drivers’ licenses, and visit their nearest Vehicle Testing Station (VTS) for roadworthy tests.
