The City of Johannesburg’s coalition government has moved to reassure residents that Mayor Kabelo Gwamanda who fell ill during the debate on his State of the City Address (Soca) last Wednesday is in good health.
Mayoral Committee Member Dr Mgcini Tshwaku who conducted a winter safety campaign in Zandspruit on Friday said Gwamanda is now in a much better health condition because he is already back attending some meetings.
“The mayor is actually doing very well; he is recuperating at home. He attended the meeting virtually, he contributed to the meeting we had,” he said.
The MMC called out Action SA for being insensitive by attempting to pursue a motion of no confidence against the mayor on the back of news of his ill-health.
“We were worried as well but I find it very opportunistic and concerning that other parties, while someone is sick, pass a motion of no confidence without even asking how he is doing. I find it to be inhumane. How do you work with people who show they don’t care about human life? I think that is very heartless and disappointing,” he said.
A date is expected to soon be announced for the conclusion of the debate on the mayor’s speech while the budget speech to be presented on June 13.
