An anti-poaching investigator, Kobus de Wet was stormed and killed by a hippo while camping in the Kruger National Park on Saturday.

The South African National Parks (SANParks) confirmed the passing of its anti-poaching investigator and senior manager in the Environmental Crime Investigative Unit (ECI) based at Groenkloof in Pretoria.

SANParks spokesperson, Isaac Phaahla lauded de Wet as an anti-poaching hero who headed anti-poaching initiatives at the game reserves .

“It is with sadness that we announce the passing away of our anti-poaching hero. A senior manager in the Environmental Crime Investigative Unit Kobus de Wet  in a tragic event where he was sadly killed by a hippo while he was camping in Kruger National Park.

“He had worked for the organization for over two decades and was instrumental in the apprehension and conviction of many poachers who are serving time behind bars,” he added.

SANParks said the investigation into the incident is still ongoing.

“Details are sketchy at this stage and circumstances around the incident are under investigation,” Phaahla
