The City of Joburg is investigating claims that a member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) of Economic Development Nomoya Mnisi tried to get officials to fund a recent ANC Youth League activity using municipal resources.

Makhubele briefed the media yesterday and said the allegations made by the opposition were being probed after she received a letter of complaint from ActionSA on Thursday and she informed Mnisi about it.

Mnisi allegedly ordered the former acting Chief Financial Officer (CFO) working at Johannesburg Property Company (JPC), Sipho Mzobe, to pay for an ANCYL event held in Sandton, for three days in July, R867 482 00.

ActionSA opened the case at Hillbrow Police Station this month.

Makhubele said the matter could be referred to their disciplinary committee as the Metro takes any allegation of corruption seriously and the claims against the MMC were no exception and that she is seeking legal advice.

“Before you can refer a councilor to this disciplinary committee the speaker must make a determination on the level, complexity or even the severity of these allegations because the ethics committee is not something we play around with.

“It is a very serious committee that if found guilty, a councilor can be terminated with recommendations from the MEC of Cogta so we view it in a very serious light,” Makhubele said.

“She was afforded seven days to respond to the allegations. We then received her response last week Friday which we are looking at as office.”
