The Premier Soccer League, PSL, will be observing a moment of silence for the late Orland Pirates Captain Papi Khomane.

Khomane and his mother Rita, passed away following a car accident on their way to Newcastle, KwaZulu-Natal, on Saturday morning.

“The Premier Soccer League sends heartfelt condolences to the Khomane family, and the football community at large. A moment of silence will be observed in their honour at all PSL fixtures this week commencing on Sunday afternoon. May their souls repose peacefully,” read a statement from the PSL.

Khomane, donned the Bafana Bafana jersey nine times, made more than 150 appearances for the Buccaneers and 91 for Jomo Cosmos.

He is the son of Pirates legend, Yster Khomane.  Meanwhile, the soccer fraternity continues to pay tribute for the lanky defender.

Moroka Swallows Coach, Steve Khompela, spoke about the times he worked as an TV analyst with the late Papi and described him as a rare talent.

“I remember during match analysis he was brave, he had a character personality where he never felt threatened, because people who feel threatened threaten others, and people who feel intimidated intimidate others.

“Papi had none of those, a great sense of comfort, confidence in himself, and how he conducted and spoke to me with respect, very clear.

“Papi was a great person, and no one can tell me otherwise, I don’t remember hearing nasty stories about him except the dedication and discipline he always portrayed, a great leader,” said Khompela.

Mamelodi Sundowns Coach, Rhulani Mokwena, said he’s saddened by Khomane’s passing and the close-knit family relations and history he has with the Khomane’s.

“Because of my history with Orlando Pirates and the family, every time I went to the Nike centre as a kid and player, Ntate Khomane treated me like his son, up until the time worked at Pirates he always supported.

“When I heard the news, I broke down, not only did I break down because of death, because I could only picture what Ntate Khomane is going through because it’s not only his son but it’s also his beloved wife,” highlighted Mokwena.

Former players and coaches also paid tribute to the lanky defender on X.

“Condolences to the Khomane family, the Orlando Pirates family, and the football fraternity. Rest in Peace Skipper,” said former Pirates striker, Phumudzo Manendze.

Our heartfelt deepest condolences to the family of Papi Khomane, Orlando Pirates FC, and the entire Football fraternity,” said former Bafana Bafana Coach, Pitso Mosimane.

“Sad sad sad news!!! Condolences to the entire Khomane family. Thank you Papi Khomane for the years of service and inspiration,” commented Abo Mndayi on X.
