Tennis great Rafael Nadal has left the tennis family in grief after he announced his withdrawal from the Australian Open 2024.
Many were hoping for better news, after the Spaniard lost last week to Aussie Thompson in the quarterfinals of the Brisbane International in Australia.
He left the court on several occasions to receive treatment on his leg, and thereafter announced that he’ll await a medical report before announcing his participation at the first major tournament of the ATP.
The 37-year-old Nadal, who was making his competitive return to the sport after more than a year absence due to hip injury, had been impressive in the tournament winning his matches in straight sets.
In a statement posted on his social media account, the Spaniard said he’s not yet ready.
“During my last match in Brisbane I had a small muscle problem on a muscle that as you know made me worried. Once I got to Melbourne, I had the chance to have an MRI and I have a micro tear on a muscle, not in the same part where I had the injury and that’s good news. Right, now I am not ready to compete at the maximum level of exigence in 5 sets matches,” read the statement.
He highlighted that he was returning to Spain, to consult his doctor, get some treatment and rest. The former world number one and 22-time Grand Slam champion, said he worked hard during the year for his comeback, and he hopes to be at his best level in three months.
He said he worked hard during the year for his comeback and his goal is to be back at his best level in 3 months’ time. Nadal expressed his disappointment that he would not play before the Melbourne crowd.
“Within the sad news for me for not being able to play in front of the amazing Melbourne crowds, this is not very bad news, and we all remain positive with the evolution for the season. I really wanted to play here in Australia, and I have had the chance to play a few matches that made me very happy and positive. Thanks all for the support and see you soon,” ended the statement.
The Australian Open begins at Melbourne on 14 January.
