Fourty-two of the 46 victims of horrific Easter bus accident at the Mamatlakala bridge on the R518, have been positively identified through the DNA processes.

The number includes the six that were identified immediately after the accident.

The victims, from Molepolole in Botswana, were on their way to attend a service at the St Engenas Zion Christian Church in Moria, when their bus plunged nearly 50 metres off the bridge last month.

The DNA process was conducted by a multidisciplinary team which is currently responsible for coordinating the recovery and positive identification of the victims.

“We are short of words to appreciate our team for the professionalism and speed at which they managed to handle this disaster appreciating its sensitivity.

“We are looking forward to meeting the team on Monday at the Mokopane hospital where further updates on the way forward will be provided.

“The team is currently finalizing the analysis of the remaining samples,” said Limpopo Health MEC Dr Phophi Ramathuba.

The team comprising members of the SAPS victim identification unit and Forensic Pathology Services will meet on Monday at Mokopane hospital, where they will finalize the packaging of the remains of the deceased to prepare them for repatriation.

An eight-old girl was the only survivor of the accident, and has since returned home after she was discharged from hospital.
