Ramaphosa names parties that will form the new Government of National Unity in South Africa

President Cyril Ramaphosa has warned political parties that have refused to be part of the so-called Government of National Unity (GNU) he’s forming and includes the DA, Patriotic Alliance, IFP, Good Party, National Freedom Party and the Pan Africanist Congress.

Ramaphosa addressed a crowd at the Union Buildings gardens shortly after being inaugurated for a second term as President of the republic and said those who don’t want to work with him risk being isolated.

“We want to work together to create a jobs, to bring development for our people but there are those who don’t want to cooperate and are pulling together. We want to say to them that if you don’t want to come forward, we are moving forward and are leaving you behind,” he said.

Ramaphosa also used the platform to address concerns that have been raised in and outside the ANC that the DA will be dominant in the GNU.

“Even those within the GNU, if they steal they will not be spared, we will remove them,” said Ramaphosa.
He said his second and last term in office was going to be about job creation. We want to work together to create jobs, if we do that then we are friends but if you don’t want to work together to create jobs and more jobs because that’s what our people want,” he said.

Meanwhile ANC supporters at the event expressed cautious optimism at the prospects of the GNU with many not able to hide their obvious disdain for the Democratic Alliance.

“We are happy that there’s a government and a president from the ANC but we are really not happy with the DA and these other racist parties but we remain hopeful,” said Thabo Sekgotho who traveled from Free State to attend the inauguration. There were options. We could have gone with EFF, MK and PAC because we want land and economic freedom in our lifetime and we are not going to get that with the racist DA,” said another supporter who said he will remain in the party. Ramaphosa was at pains to explain reasons for the deal saying it was in line with “ the will of the people”.

“This is what our people wanted. Our people did not elect a single party to run government, they said ‘work together for the betterment of the country’ and that is why we brought the parties that are in the GNU and the door remains open for others who want to come to the party,” said Ramaphosa.
