Gauteng police are investigating a case of murder and attempted murder, after a woman believed to be in her 40’s was shot dead in Fleurhof Roodepoort this morning, while boarding a Metrobus to work.
“It is alleged that the suspect was inside the bus as it stopped at the bus stop. As the woman was about to get into the bus, the suspect fired several shots at her,” said police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Mavela Masondo
Masondo added that after the shooting, the suspect jumped into a white VW Gold and sped off. They also dismissed reports that the shooting was transport-related, as the victim is not connected to the bus company. Police say they have assembled a team to investigate the matter and hope to resolve it within 72 hours.
“The motive at this stage is not known. But it looks like it was a hit, because only one person was shot. There were three, but only one was shot. The team is still making follow-up with family members, survivors, and witnesses,” said lead investigator, Major-General Mbuso Khumalo.Meanwhile, Metrobus has confirmed the incident and assured commuters that their safety remains the company’s top priority.
“It is with regret that Metrobus must inform all its commuters and citizens of Johannesburg at large that on 26 June 2024, while travelling on Baobab Street in Fleurhof en route to Sandton.
“Our bus was boarded by an unidentified person who later proceeded to open fire on commuters who were attempting to board the bus. Unfortunately, one fatality resulted from this incident,” read a statement from Metrobus.
