The ANC is set to reclaim power in the City of Tshwane following the removal of Cilliers Brink as mayor which effectively ousted the metro’s Democratic Alliance led coalition government.
Councillors voted overwhelmingly for Brink’s removal in a motion of no confidence opposed only by the DA, Freedom Front Plus and ACDP on Thursday.
The motion of no confidence against unified parties that identify as “progressive” with occasional singing and embracing of each other during the proceedings.
“We take serious exception to the consistent labelling of this motion as an ANC motion. This is a motion of the people of Tshwane, it represents all of us. Our people have suffered for 8 years under the racist DA and we are correcting that today,” said EFF Tshwane Regional chairperson Obakeng Ramabodu.
Following Brink’s removal, council has 14 working days to elect a new mayor who will in turn appoint the rest of the executive.
It is not clear how ANC, EFF and Action SA will share power in the new government but the ANC’s new ally wants the mayorship.
Leader Herman Mashaba said Action SA’s Nasipha Moya who served as Brink’s deputy is best suitable to take over.
“In my engagements with the ANC I made it clear that we are coming into this marriage on the basis that Dr Nasipha Moya has to take over as the new mayor. She knows the city more than any other councillor here and deserves to lead,” said Mashaba.
ANC Gauteng Provincial Secretary TK Nciza could not confirm if Moya would get the mayorship saying positions will be the last thing to discuss.
Nciza said the incoming ANC led coalition government would turn around the city.
“We want to bring services to our people because they have been neglected for so long under the DA,” said Nciza.
