Proteas redeem themselves against Ireland

The Proteas have risen above ashes after defeating Ireland in their One-Day-International series opening match, in Abu Dhabi.

They are leading the three-legged series with 1-0 after winning the match with 139 runs.

The triumph comes as the team finds itself under pressure to secure more wins.

The Proteas haven’t had the best tour in the United Arab Emirates, UAE, after losing a 50-over series against Afghanistan and went over to draw 1-1 to Ireland in the two-match T20 International series last month.

Meanwhile, the team’s seam bowler Lungi Ndigi said despite some pressure from Ireland, they were able to claim victory, which he attributed to batters, Ryan Rickleton and Tristan Stubbs.

“To have Ryan and Stubbs pull us out the dirt the way they did was really good to see, especially two young guys really putting their hands up in terms of what they are capable of under pressure.

I think it’s always good to start off a series that way. It takes a lot of pressure off.

The job is obviously not done yet but it’s always better to be 1-0 up than 1-0 down.

It was a really good performance from the guys,’’ said Ngidi.

The Proteas now stand a chance to break their year long win drought as they prepare for the second ODI clash against Ireland on Friday at 13:30pm SA time.
