Bafana Bafana walloped Congo Brazzaville 5-0 in a 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium, Gqeberha, on Friday night.
This is one of the team’s biggest wins in a continental match and moves them a step closer to qualifying for the tournament to be held in Morocco next year.
Teboho Mokoena was in scintillating performance netting a brace before the 40 000 cheering crowd.
The other goals were scored by Batusi Aubass, Lyle Foster and Iqraam Rayners to put the team on the driving seat.
The Bafana coach praised the team’s performance.
“I think that it was amazing, the way we started the game, the way we played football.
This was something that I always wanted to see from this team, and we did it also in the AFCON.
But today it was fantastic.
Many goals, five goals, good football, modern football, forward football, high rhythm in the game.
And it shows again what a group of players I have. A group of players I’m very proud of, and I have said it also already before.
But those guys know when they have to perform.
We had a little decompression in September, and we talked about it.
And then you see the reaction today.
Those guys wanted to make a statement, and they made a statement with good football,” said Broos.
The coach however warned the team not to be complacent, as there are still more matches to play.
“But it’s only three points and next Tuesday we have another game.
Those five goals don’t count, so we have to prepare ourselves,” warned the coach.
Bafana are now joint-top of Group K alongside Uganda, both with 7 points, but Uganda holds an advantage due to their superior away goals in head-to-head matches.
Congo remains in third place, while South Sudan, are sitting at the bottom of the table.
The team will travel to Congo Brazzaville on Sunday ahead of the return match on Tuesday, which will be played at 18:00 South African time.
