In a bid to dispel growing doubts about her authority, Tshwane Mayor Dr Nasiphi Moya has emphatically stated that she is at the helm of the municipality’s leadership. Her declaration comes amid concerns that the African National Congress (ANC), which holds a majority in the Council, exerts undue influence over her administration.

Dr Moya, who ascended to the mayoral role just over a month ago following a new power-sharing agreement between ActionSA, the ANC, and the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), spoke candidly about her ambitions for the capital city. During an interview with SABC News reporter Patricia Visagie, she detailed her commitment to restoring Tshwane’s faltering finances, promoting ethical governance, and maintaining stability within the Council.

The pressures on the new mayor are palpable. With service delivery and fiscal responsibility at the forefront of her priorities, Dr Moya faces a daunting task. The recent tensions arising within the Tshwane Council, particularly linked to an ANC Councillor’s failure to fulfil his duties, have raised concerns that the fragile power-sharing arrangement could hinder her intended turnaround strategy.

“I am here to serve the people of Tshwane and I intend to lead with integrity,” Dr Moya stated, urging residents to hold her accountable as she sets forth ambitious objectives. Her vision extends to a notable increase in revenue collection aimed at rejuvenating the municipality’s financial health by the time she reaches 100 days in office.

However, there are whispers of uncertainty regarding the extent of her autonomy. Political observers are questioning whether Dr Moya will be able to assert her leadership effectively, or if she will face pressure to conform to the ANC’s agenda. Critics worry that her leadership could be compromised if she opts to avoid controversy in a political landscape that is often characterised by fierce rivalry and competition.
