It is a day of mourning for South Africa as the news of soccer icon Lucas Moripe’s passing reverberates through the nation. The 74-year-old legend, affectionately known as the “God of Football”, departed in the early hours of yesterday morning, leaving a profound impact on both the sporting world and the City of Tshwane.

Tshwane Mayor Nasiphi Moya expressed the deep sorrow felt across the city, stating that Moripe not only made his mark on the soccer field but also dramatically shaped the sporting identity of Tshwane. “His legacy and contributions to the name recognition of the City of Tshwane will not be forgotten,” Moya remarked, extending heartfelt condolences to the Moripe family during this difficult time.

Moripe’s extraordinary talents were showcased prominently in the 1970s, where he donned the jerseys of prominent clubs such as the Orlando Pirates and the Pretoria Callies. His unique style of play and determined spirit endeared him to soccer fans nationwide, securing him a revered spot in the annals of South African football history.

In 2010, the City of Tshwane immortalised Moripe’s legacy by naming its landmark stadium in Atteridgeville after him. This significant gesture serves as a testament to the respect and admiration the community holds for Moripe, who continued to inspire others even in his later years.

Mayor Moya highlighted her personal connection with Moripe, mentioning that in her role as the Member of the Mayoral Committee for Community and Social Development Services, she often visited him to ensure his well-being. During one visit in July 2024, a special delegation, including representatives from the Shaka Easter Games, presented Moripe with a new wheelchair, a poignant gesture reflecting the love and respect he garnered throughout his life.

Further inclining towards preserving his memory, the Moripe Foundation published a book chronicling his life, which serves not only as a biography but as an inspiration for future generations. The mayor has encouraged both book distributors and the general public to support the Moripe family by purchasing this compilation, ensuring that his extraordinary legacy continues to resonate. It is a day of mourning for South Africa as the news of soccer icon Lucas Moripe’s passing reverberates through the nation.
