A two-year-old child from Randstad village in the Greater Taung Local Municipality in the North West has passed away, after consuming snacks that were allegedly contaminated.
According to the provincial Department of Education, a Grade R from Tshipo Mangwegape Primary School who also consumed the snacks, is receiving medical attention at the Taung District Hospital.
The snacks were purchased at the local spaza shop by a family member of the learner for the two children.
The department said it is still awaiting laboratory results to determine the cause of children’s illness.
The Department MEC Viola Motsumi, expressed her concern and sent a message of condolences to the affected family.
“It is deeply disheartening to witness such a tragic loss of life and the suffering of a young learner due to suspected foodborne illness.
I extend my sincere condolences to the family and wish the Grade R learner a full and speedy recovery.
This incident underscores the urgent need for stricter oversight of food safety in our communities to prevent such tragedies from happening again,” said Motsumi.
Moreover, Motsumi urged parents, guardians, and community members to exercise caution when purchasing food items, especially from informal vendors.
“The Department will also engage with relevant stakeholders to ensure a thorough investigation into the matter and to enhance food safety measures in the province,” explained Motsumi.
A team led by a psychologist has been dispatched to offer psychosocial support to both children and families.
