Former Manchester United striker coach and Bafana Bafana player Benni McCarthy has dismissed reports linking him to Mamelodi Sundowns.

This after he held an impromptu meeting with Sundowns Technical Director Flemming Berg in London, sparking rumours of a possible move to Sundowns.

But the former Porto FC marksman has dismissed the rumours.

“We bumped into each at the airport and then it was basically it.

We recognised each other and we just spoke in general, it was more about European football.

Fleming just explained that time when he worked for Chelsea as one of the international scouts and he was based in Portugal, and it was at the same time I was playing for Porto.

We basically just touch on that, modern day football, South African football.

It never came up where there was an insinuating from his side or from my side that there could be a collaboration of joining them,” said the Hanover Park born striker, who was speaking in Sandton when he was announced as one of the Carling Knockout Cup brand ambassadors.

McCarthy, who spent two seasons at United, said he doesn’t have desires now to coach in the Betway Premiership, but instead has his sights set on major leagues abroad.

Moreover, he’s looking for a challenge which is right a project for him and concurs with the club.

“My mindset is elsewhere.

But I’m not closing the doors to coming back home or anywhere in Africa.

But my ambitions are just high whether is the Major League Soccer, the Premier League, La Liga or the Portuguese league, that’s where I’m looking to go,” explained the coach.

In addition, the all-time Bafana Bafana goal scorer highlighted that he already had three interviews with different Major League Soccer clubs but will only know if successful when the league resumes soon.

He had a stint with Cape Town City and Amazulu as head coach, before pursuing his European move.

McCarthy was speaking at the briefing to announce the Carling Black Label Cup which will feature title holders Magesi FC and Premiership All Star Team voted for by the fans.

The match will be held on 21 December at the Orlando Stadium in Soweto.
