As rising global oil prices impact everyday expenses, the South African government’s decision to lower fuel costs next week provides a welcome relief for motorists and households alike.

The Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources has announced the fuel price adjustment with effect from 5 February.

This is the second increase this year.

“Both grades of petrol will increase by 82 cents per litre.

Diesel will increase by R1.01 and R1.05 cents per litre.

Illuminating paraffin will increase by R1.29 cents per litre at retail level.

LP Gas will increase by 42 cents per kilogram,” said the department’s director of fuel pricing mechanism, Robert Maake.

Maake said the increase was necessitated by several factors.

“The reason for the fuel adjustment are the higher oil prices and weaker rand against the US dollar during the period under review.

The freight or shipping costs for LP Gas were higher on average during the same period.

However, the slate levy remains unchanged at zero cents per litre in the price structure for both petrol and diesel,” explained Maake.
