There’s growing calls for the government to act against Afri-Forum and Trade Union Solidarity for continuing with its misinformation campaign. The right-wing group has once again returned to USA where they are seeking to convince the Donald Trump administration to impose sanctions on the South African government and top ANC officials.
“We call on the EFF and other progressive forces to join the youth league in pushing back against Afriforum. We are going to be very busy at police stations and courts because we want to press treason charges against Afriforum,” said ANC Youth League President Collen Malatjie.
Malatjie said the league will put pressure on the government to act against Afriforum. The EFF also blasted the groups in a statement accusing them of seeking a return to apartheid and colonialism.
“In essence, AfriForum and Solidarity Movement are asking Trump to help them partition South Africa. 140 years after the Berlin Conference, these racist right-wing organisations are asking a major Western power to help them partition South Africa and create a whites-only enclave at the southern tip of Africa,” said the EFF.
The party warned the right wingers appear to be preparing to topple South Africa’s democratically elected government through a coup. President Cyril Ramaphosa on Thursday urged the groups to stop bad mouthing the country.
“I’ve heard that AfriForum and Solidarity have met representatives in the US government, and they’re doing precisely what we said as South Africans we should not do… We should stop running to other countries. We should discuss our own problems here and find solutions,” said Ramaphosa.
Minister in the presidency Khumbudzo Ntshavheni was less diplomatic than Ramaphosa telling the groups leave the country if they are not happy.
“We are not going to make some people peace time hero’s , if they don’t like South Africa and the efforts of government on redressing the inequalities of the past , they should take President Trump on his offer and resettle in the United States and stop peddling lies. Ntshavheni said Afriforum’s views doesn’t represent the general attitude of Afrikaners in South Africa.
“So those who don’t like what is happening in South Africa, there’s an offer, and we must emphasise this; it is not all the Afrikaners; it is not all white people. There’s an offer; they must take it and stop peddling lies,” she said.
While there appears to be case to answer for Afriforum and Solidarity, the government has done nothing to hold them accountable.
