NERSA approves Eskom tariff hikes

Energy regulator, NERSA, has given the green light to Eskom’s retail tariffs and structural adjustment application for the 2025 financial year.

According to the regulator, at a meeting held on 11 March 2025, NERSA considered and approved Eskom Retail and Structural Adjustment (ERTSA) application-an average tariff increase of 12.74% for Eskom direct customers and 11.32% for municipalities.

“The approved standard tariff increase of 12.74% will be implemented on 1 April 2025 until 31 March 2026 for Eskom direct customers and the 11.32% increase will be implemented on 1 July 2025 for municipal customers.

The difference in percentage is brought about by the difference in the implementation dates of Eskom direct customers and municipalities buying from Eskom,” said NERSA’s spokesperson, Charles Hlebela.

The regulator further sought to defend the increases, adding that the decision considered all the inputs made by various parties.

“The decision has taken into consideration the comments raised by stakeholders, which include inter alia, the impact of the approved Retail Tariff Plan, the development of a long-term strategy to deal with the cross-subsidies, consideration for different cost structures, Eskom’s dominance and the limited consultation period,” explained Hlebela.

Despite concerns raised regarding the negative impact the hiked electricity prices will have on consumers, NERSA maintains that it aims to create what it described as “fair distribution and not assist Eskom to boost its revenue.”
