Tokai Manor house evacuated as fire rages in the mountains above Cape Town

The historic Tokai Manor house in Cape Town, a provincial heritage site and operational hub for SANParks, is currently undergoing evacuation due to escalating wildfire threats from the mountains above the area. The blaze, which has consumed approximately 3000 hectares of vegetation since it ignited on Friday, poses a significant risk as firefighters and aerial support grapple with the intense flames and dry conditions.

Emergency services have been actively deploying helicopters for water bombing operations since Monday morning in an effort to combat the fire that has quickly spread, and is yet to be contained. Jermaine Carelse, a spokesperson for the City of Cape Town’s fire and rescue services, acknowledged the precarious situation, highlighting the concerns surrounding the thick, dry vegetation that has been exacerbating the fire’s intensity.

“The situation remains fluid,” Carelse stated, emphasizing the urgency of the response. “We are employing air resources for water bombing and have crews on the ground battling the blaze. Road closures remain in place for public safety, and we urge everyone to stay away from the affected areas.”

The Tokai Manor, a site steeped in history, now faces an uncertain future amid the flames that threaten not just property but also the natural landscape and ecosystem surrounding Tokai. Onlookers and residents are being reminded of the immediate dangers, as the priority remains ensuring public safety and employing all available resources to contain the fire.

As the ground and air teams work tirelessly to mitigate the threat, the community watches anxiously, hoping for favourable weather conditions that could aid firefighting efforts. The local authorities are urging residents to remain vigilant and to heed any further updates concerning evacuation protocols and safety measures.
