The South African National Taxi Council (SANTACO) has dismissed as untrue and unfounded reports that the taxi industry has resolved to demand money from private vehicle drivers and impound their vehicles if they fail to pay the money.
The association said such misinformation is circulating on social media platforms, and it discouraged the public from taking such unfounded reports seriously.
The comments come after videos emerged on social media, showing some taxi drivers and their patrol vehicles, confronting motorists who had given motorists lifts in their private vehicles.
“SANTACO categorically distances itself from and condemns the unlawful actions of individuals allegedly stopping vehicles and extorting money from private motorists under the guise of representing the taxi industry.
“These acts are not sanctioned by SANTACO and are in direct conflict with our values and mission.
“We reaffirm that SANTACO is committed to the safe, reliable, and lawful transport of South Africans in roadworthy vehicles,” said SANTACO spokesperson, Rebecca Phala.
In addition, Phala said the industry is embracing innovation and modern technology to improve its services and ensure the safety of our commuters and the public.
“We urge the public to refrain from spreading unverified information that damages the integrity of the industry and sows fear among communities.
“False narratives not only mislead the public but also undermine ongoing efforts to professionalize and improve the industry,” pleaded Phala.
She urged anyone who experiences harassment or unlawful conduct on the roads, to report such incidents to the police.
