The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has warned that two cold front systems will impact various parts of the country from Monday to Friday. According to the Service, cold conditions are expected to spread significantly across the country from Tuesday.

“On Monday a cold front will make landfall over the South-western parts of the country, resulting in wet, cold and windy conditions over the western parts of the Western Cape.

“On Tuesday 20 May, the above-mentioned weather conditions will spread to the east, affecting the Namakwa District of the Northern Cape and Eastern Cape.

“This continued impact of the weather conditions will be due to a well-developed cold front, resulting in isolated to scattered showers and rain,” SAWS alerted.

Additionally, it warned that freezing levels are expected to drop considerably and create conditions favourable for some snowfall over the high-lying areas and a general drop in temperatures.

Meanwhile, the City of Johannesburg Emergency Management Services (EMS) said it is on high alert to ensure an effective response to incidents which may occur during the cold front.

EMS spokesperson Robert Mulaudzi cautioned residents to use heating devices safely and shared safety tips during the cold wave.

“Keep burning candles out of reach of young children. Do not leave young children unattended in a room with a lit candle, heater, and paraffin stove. Store candles, matches and lighters away from the reach of young children. Use safety containers to store paraffin containers with safety caps. Do not connect electricity illegally. Don’t leave any heater unattended while in use; it might cause fire at home,” warned Mulaudzi.

The SAWS urged the public to adhere to the weather warnings and plan accordingly.
