The City of Ekurhuleni is grappling with shock and sorrow following the tragic murder of Mpho Mafole, its head of forensic audit, who was fatally shot in a drive-by attack on the R23 highway in Kempton Park on Monday evening.

Mafole, a respected figure in the city’s administration, was reportedly driving along the busy road around 18:00 when an unknown assailant opened fire, striking him multiple times. Gauteng police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi confirmed that officers arrived at the scene to find Mafole’s lifeless body inside his vehicle, a grim reminder of the violent crime that continues to plague the region.

“According to information received, the victim was driving on the R23 Road when he was shot by an unknown suspect. The motive of the shooting is unknown at this stage, and police investigations continue,” Nevhuhulwi stated, indicating the urgency with which authorities are seeking to uncover the reasons behind this heinous act.

The City of Ekurhuleni expressed its devastation over the loss of a key member of its team. In a statement released shortly after the incident, city officials lamented Mafole’s passing, affirming their commitment to cooperating fully with law enforcement to ensure that those responsible for the crime are brought to justice.

“We are deeply shocked and saddened by the murder of Mr Mafole. His contributions to the forensic audit unit were significant, and his work will not be forgotten. We extend our deepest condolences to his family and loved ones during this trying time,” the city’s spokesperson remarked.

Authorities are urging anyone with information about the shooting or the potential motive to come forward and assist the investigation, reinforcing the community’s role in combating crime and violence.
