Mbombela, Mpumalanga – A solemn atmosphere enveloped Hoërskool Bergvlam as dignitaries and mourners gathered to honour the late former Deputy President David Dabede Mabuza on his state funeral service. President Cyril Ramaphosa arrived to pay his final respects, ready to deliver a eulogy that reflects on Mabuza’s unwavering commitment to public service and governance.
The ceremony was marked by a poignant moment as African National Congress (ANC) National Chairperson, Gwede Mantashe, presented the party flag to Mabuza’s family. The flag, which had adorned the late leader’s coffin during a brief prayer session at his homestead in Barberton, symbolised both the legacy of his contributions and the profound loss felt by the ANC and the nation at large.
David Mabuza, who passed away on Thursday, 3 July 2025, at the age of 64, served as South Africa’s Deputy President from 2018 to 2023, and previously held the position of Premier of Mpumalanga from 2009 to 2018. His leadership and influence extended beyond these roles, as he was deeply involved in various executive capacities within the province, demonstrating a dedicated commitment to addressing critical issues such as public health and governmental transparency.
Known for his significant strides as Leader of Government Business in Parliament and his role as Chair of the South African National AIDS Council, Mabuza’s tenure was marked by a resolute focus on improving the lives of South Africans. His efforts in championing social issues and pursuing economic development proved vital in the nation’s continued fight against inequality and poverty.
The decision to accord him a Category 2 state funeral reflects both the esteem in which he was held and the legacy he leaves behind. Beyond the political sphere, Mabuza was remembered as a leader who understood the complexities of governance and the importance of compassion within the socio-economic landscape of South Africa.
As the ceremony progresses, President Ramaphosa’s eulogy is anticipated to encapsulate not only the professional milestones achieved by Mabuza but also his humanity—his commitment to his constituents and the country he served. Mabuza’s passing is not merely a loss for the ANC; it is a profound loss for each citizen who benefitted from his advocacy and devotion to the nation’s welfare.
