Eskom has warned the public against illegal electricity connections during the winter season to avert blackouts.
According to the entity, there is an increase in electricity demand during this period, and the illegal connections will lead to equipment damage, transformer overloads and in some cases explosions.
“To help maintain a stable and uninterrupted electricity supply, customers are strongly urged to avoid bypassing meters and refrain from illegal connections.
With load shedding suspended and electricity demand rising during the winter period, Eskom calls on customers to act responsibly and help safeguard the power system,” read a statement from the entity.
Eskom further encouraged citizens to report any suspected illegal activity.
“Illegal connections and meter bypassing not only constitute theft but also place immense strain on the network, often leading to transformer overloads, equipment damage, and in severe cases, explosions and extended outages,” explained Eskom.
Meanwhile, Eskom adds that it is forced to implement load reduction by switching off power during peak hours at high risk and isolated areas, to prevent potential damage and ensure the safe and fair access to electricity for all.
The entity still maintains confidence in its winter outlook, adding that it is well positioned to meet the high demand effectively.
This as an additional 3 330 MW generation capacity was expected to return to service on Monday and throughout the coming week.
Customers are urged to continue using electricity wisely during this period.
