The newly elected North West Indigenous Games Council said it will be aiming for victory and to grow the sport across the province during its tenure. The council will be led by Chairperson Themba Nyezi, alongside his deputy, Papi Mokhadi.

Among other appointments were that of Technical Director, Matthews Noge, Coach and Development Convenor, Daddy Moremi as well as Marketing and Promotion Convenor, Rhino Mere. Nyezi said they want to introduce these games to schools in the province.

“We are going to make sure that indigenous games grow in the North West, and make sure that we have leagues in the schools and in the community. Our aim is to also take young people off the streets and promote sports participation,” said Nyezi.

Furthermore, Indigenous Games in South Africa are viewed as a response to embrace culture and popularise cultural activities. They also reflect the country’s diverse history, provide entertainment, cultural education and encourage social cohesion. According to the Department of Sport, Arts, and Culture, indigenous games traditional sports and games that originate from specific cultures and communities, often passed down through generations.

The games comprise of Diketo, Kgati, Dibeke, Jukskei, Melamu and Morabaraba amongst others. North West has made a good name for itself at the National Indigenous Games festival, where it was able to win medals and set national records.
