In a weekend marked by setbacks for South African sport, disappointment reached new heights in Chicago as UFC Middleweight champion Dricus du Plessis failed to defend his title against the formidable Russian, Khamzat Chimaev. Following already tough losses from both the Proteas and the Springboks against Australia on Saturday, the stakes were high for du Plessis, who stepped into the Octagon on Sunday with the hopes of redeeming a dismal weekend.

Du Plessis, known for his power and resilience, faced a significant challenge against an unbeaten Chimaev, who showcased his elite-level wrestling throughout the bout. The fight, which concluded with all three judges scoring it 50-44 in favour of the new champion, highlighted du Plessis’ difficulties in countering Chimaev’s dominant grappling game.

This loss marked du Plessis’ third defeat in 24 professional fights, a statistic that stings but has not deterred the fighter’s spirit. In his post-fight interview, du Plessis remained resolute, vowing to regain his title and come back stronger. “This isn’t the end for me; it’s merely a chapter in my journey,” he stated, reflecting his determination in the face of adversity.

The string of losses for South African sports this weekend raises questions about the current form and competitiveness of its teams and athletes on the global stage. With the Proteas losing to Australia in the cricket arena and the Springboks facing a similar fate on the rugby field, fans were left wishing for better fortunes.
