The Gauteng government is set to engage with the residents of Soweto this Thursday as part of their G20 Summit awareness programme, aimed at briefing the community on the upcoming summit scheduled for November in Johannesburg. This initiative highlights the provincial government’s efforts to ensure that local communities are informed and prepared for the significant international gathering.
The G20 Summit is not only crucial for the nation’s visibility on the global stage but also holds potential benefits for township communities. Gauteng government spokesperson Vuyo Mhaga emphasises the summit’s transformative potential for local infrastructure and community safety. “For example, within this particular community, there are CCTV cameras that will be there post the leaders’ summit. A lot of work on street lighting, making sure we surface the roads,” Mhaga stated, outlining the improvements expected to follow the summit.
Residents will also be informed about potential inconveniences, including road closures that may occur during the summit. Transparency about these issues is crucial for local residents, as the event could temporarily disrupt their daily routines. The government intends to address these challenges head-on, ensuring the community is prepared.
In addition to infrastructure improvements, the Gauteng government is also keen on showcasing the tourism potential of the province. Mhaga explains, “We will be doing the tourism package for Gauteng. When you are in Gauteng, what else do you want to see? If you attend a meeting and it ends at 1pm where else can you go?” This initiative aims to create an attractive offering for both summit attendees and tourists, enhancing the economic opportunities within the area.
The outreach in Soweto is part of a larger effort by the Gauteng government to ensure that the local communities feel included and benefit from the G20 Summit, enhancing their everyday lives and experiences in the region. As excitement builds around the summit, the focus on community engagement promises to foster a sense of unity and collaborative spirit in preparation for this monumental event.
