Madlanga Commission hearings into Mkhwanazi’s allegations delayed

The Judicial Commission of Inquiry into allegations of criminality, political interference and corruption made by KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner, Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, will not commence with its hearings on the 1st of September as previously communicated.

The commission has attributed these delays to the procurement of infrastructure requirements.

“The Department of Justice and Constitutional Development was in the process of procuring the Commission’s infrastructure requirements that were necessary for the Commission to commence its hearings.

“Unfortunately, those commitments have not been met and as a result, it has since become clear that the Commission will not be able to start the hearings as scheduled,” read a statement by the Commission.

It further stated that it is doing its best to resolve the matter and that a new date will be communicated.

“The commission assures South Africans that it is doing everything within its power to ensure that the first witness will take the stand as soon as possible after everything has been procured by the Department,” added the statement.

The delay will potentially affect the Commission’s turnaround time to submit its interim report.

Despite this, the Parliamentary Ad-hoc committee into this matter is confident that it will begin its work early September, after adopting its terms of reference.

It also unanimously agreed that SAPS be called upon first, with Lt-Gen  Mkhwanazi and suspended Police Minister, Senzo Mchunu to be among the first witnesses.
