Emotions ran high in the North Gauteng High Court as Muzi Sibiya, the first accused in the Senzo Meyiwa murder trial, broke down in tears while recalling the events surrounding his arrest and treatment by police.

Sibiya, who is testifying for a third consecutive day, told the court that he was arrested in May 2020 and later separated from his family. He claimed that police officers assaulted him multiple times while he was in custody.

He said that a few days after his arrest, police facilitated a brief reunion with his uncle before taking him to see his family. According to Sibiya, his parents were distraught when they saw his condition.

“I explained to my mother that I was arrested by the police and that they had been assaulting me for something I don’t even know about,” Sibiya told the court. “The police were alleging that I killed Senzo. When I told them I knew nothing about his death and that I did not kill him, they continued assaulting me.”

Sibiya is one of five men on trial for the 2014 murder of Bafana Bafana captain Senzo Meyiwa, who was shot and killed at the home of his girlfriend, singer Kelly Khumalo, in Vosloorus.

The trial continues.
