The South African National Defence Force (SANDF), Border Management Authority (BMA), and other key stakeholders are set to address critical challenges at the Beitbridge Border Post located outside Musina in Limpopo. Their presentation to the Parliament’s Joint Standing Committee on Defence will take place today, following an extensive oversight visit to the border on Wednesday.

The recent tour of the Beitbridge area highlighted various pressing issues, including rampant illegal migration, the smuggling of stolen vehicles, and the trafficking of illicit goods. These challenges have raised concerns not only for national security but also for the communities living along the border.

Dr Malusi Gigaba, a prominent figure in the oversight mission, emphasised the importance of the visit as a fact-finding mission aimed at grasping the complexities encountered by the SANDF and affected local communities, particularly stemming from movements from neighbouring Zimbabwe.

“The SANDF is severely underfunded,” Dr Gigaba remarked, shedding light on an alarming disparity between the military’s operational needs and the resources allocated by the government.

According to Gigaba, while the military ideally requires 22 companies actively patrolling the borders, only 15 are currently deployed. This shortfall has resulted in overwhelming strain on the existing forces, which are further hindered by a lack of personnel, vehicles, and cutting-edge technology, including drones that facilitate effective surveillance and response.

As the committee gears up for its presentation, the findings and insights drawn from this visit could instigate significant legislative action aimed at bolstering the effectiveness of border security operations in South Africa.
