A former member of the disbanded Political Killings Task Team (PKTT) has detailed how police discovered a rifle and ammunition at the Sandhurst home of businessman and murder accused Katiso “KT” Molefe during his arrest late last year.

Captain Maxwell Wanda, who served as a tactical commander within the PKTT, testified before the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry in Pretoria on Wednesday. The inquiry is investigating allegations by KwaZulu-Natal police commissioner Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi about political interference in the fight against politically motivated killings.

Wanda told the commission that Witness A guided investigators through Molefe’s luxury property during the December 2024 operation that led to his arrest.

“He also showed us, before we entered the house, a fleet of cars,” Wanda said, describing high-end vehicles positioned both in the garage and under a carport. “Amongst those cars, there was a white BMW that I mentioned earlier… on the backseat was a rifle bag with three or four rifle magazines loaded with ammunition.”

Molefe has been linked to the murder of Vereeniging engineer Armand Swart, a case that has since expanded into a major investigation involving multiple suspected contract killings.

The commission is expected to hear testimony from three additional witnesses on Wednesday, including senior Hawks members involved in the high-profile case.

Wanda’s testimony adds to the growing body of evidence already heard by the inquiry regarding the handling of investigations into politically connected killings and claims of disruptive interference from police leadership.
