Police said they expect to make more arrests, following the discovery of R20 million worth of cocaine weighing about 80kg hidden at a small holding in Midrand.

The discovery was made on Tuesday night, following a crime intelligence driven operation.

“A multidisciplinary team led by Crime Intelligence Head Office inclusive of Gauteng Organised crime unit, SAPS JHB K9 and members of the Local Criminal Record Centre were following up on information of drugs that were being stored at a plot in Blue Hills, Midrand.”

According to further investigation, the drugs were brought into South Africa from a neighbouring country and were destined for Cape Town, Western Cape.

The cocaine was found hidden in a storage room on the identified plot,” said police spokesperson, Brigadier Athlenda Mathe.

Furthermore, Mathe said investigations are underway to determine if the suspect is part of a syndicate as they believe that there might be more people involved, due to the value of the drugs discovered.

The spokesperson also highlighted that they have intensified their targets in the farming areas, small holding plots, amongst others, following recent drug busts in such areas in Mpumalanga and Gauteng.

“We’ve observed recently that these crime syndicates are now targeting farms and small holdings. In the recent past, we had a R350m drug lab bust in Mpumalanga, where five Mexicans and a South African were arrested. We also had similar success in Gauteng,” explained Mathe.

Mathe said the suspect is expected to appear before the Midrand Magistrate Court later this week, on a possible charge of possession of drugs as well as dealing in drugs.
