The Gauteng Anti-Gang Unit (AGU) has arrested a 20-year-old suspect linked to a recent double murder and five counts of attempted murder in Westbury, Johannesburg. According to police, the arrest follows an intelligence-driven operation after the Crime Intelligence Unit provided crucial information on the suspect’s location.
The AGU traced and arrested the suspect at a high school in Diepkloof on Wednesday. Police provincial spokesperson Brigadier Brenda Muridili said the arrest marks an important step in the ongoing investigation.
“The swift action by the Anti-Gang Unit demonstrates our commitment to rooting out gang-related crime and ensuring that perpetrators face the full might of the law,” said Muridili.
“We will continue tracking down the remaining suspects until justice is served.”
Police confirmed that two of the five injured victims have since been discharged from hospital, while investigations continue to locate the remaining suspects. Westbury has long been plagued by gang-related violence, with rival groups often clashing over territory and drug trade operations.
The community has repeatedly called for stronger police presence and intervention following a series of deadly shootings over the years.In response, the Anti-Gang Unit was deployed to stabilize the area and dismantle criminal networks fueling the violence. National Police Commissioner General Fannie Masemola has called on parents to take an active role in helping authorities identify individuals involved in gang activities. Masemola said the Anti-Gang Unit has been deployed to several crime hotspots, including Westbury, Eldorado Park, and Langlaagte, as part of an intensified crackdown on gang-related violence.
“We are on the heels of the suspects,” Masemola said. The suspect is expected to appear before the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court on Friday, 31 October 2025.
