Residents of Finetown, Weilers Farm, and Vlakfontein accused Johannesburg Water of failing to provide water tankers during planned maintenance that began on Saturday.

The utility had warned that several areas would be affected by water outages during the maintenance work and had promised that water tankers would be deployed to affected communities.

Finetown resident Delight Bungeni said she had no alternative source of water after taps in her area ran dry.

“When you cook ot wash you need water everything needs water and i haven’t seen the water truck,” she said.

Other residents said they were facing similar challenges, with no water tankers delivered to their areas throughout the maintenance period.

“There is no truck that is moving around providing us with water, so im stuck because today is the only day that I have because I work six days a week.” Promise Ndlovu from Weilers Farm said.

“I did store water but was not enough information had to bath and do laundry so that’s what I say it wasnt enough.” Zimkhitha said.

Johannesburg Water had previously indicated that at least over 80 water tankers were required to adequately supply all affected areas over the weekend.

Joburg Water senior manager of operations Randhir Singh said the entity had procured 20 water tankers, 16 of which had already been delivered and would be deployed to affected areas over the maintenance period.

“We have purchased 20, with 16 already on hand. Including the tankers we have commissioned from contractors, we have over 80 at our disposal. So we are comfortable that we have the number to ensure affected areas are supplied,” Singh said.
