Warrick “DJ Warras” Stock has been remembered as a patriotic unifier, a real-life superhero, and a man filled with love. These tributes emerged during his memorial service held in Sandton on Friday.

The 40-year-old DJ, activist, and community leader was shot and killed on Tuesday in the Johannesburg CBD. His murder sent shockwaves through the city and reignited concerns about violent crime and the safety of community activists.

DJ Warras was widely known for his outspoken stance against crime and corruption, particularly his involvement in efforts to reclaim hijacked buildings in the inner city. Through his activism, he worked closely with law-enforcement agencies and community organizations, earning admiration from supporters while also highlighting the risks faced by those who challenge organised criminal networks.

Podcaster Penuel Mlotshwa said DJ Warras was never afraid to get his hands dirty and always led from the front.
“Warras decided to put his hand up and try to fix things. He could have stayed in entertainment, he could have continued deejaying and simply remained the cool guy we all knew. But he chose to be part of the struggle,” he said.
“He was definitely braver than most of us, including myself. He was a real-life action hero.”

Broadcaster Sizwe Dhlomo expressed heartbreak that DJ Warras never had the chance to fully realise his potential, describing his death as a loss not only to his loved ones but to the nation.
“I can probably count on one hand the number of people with as much potential as Warrick. By human standards, he achieved a lot, but what he was capable of… he probably didn’t even reach a quarter of that potential,” Dhlomo said.

Meanwhile, police have confirmed that six people have been taken in for questioning in connection with the murder, with investigations ongoing.
