AFCON 2025 kicks off in Morocco with hosts facing Comoros in opening clash

The 35th edition of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) gets underway today, as host nation Morocco takes on Comoros in the tournament’s curtain-raiser at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat.

A spectacular opening ceremony, showcasing Morocco’s rich cultural heritage and African unity through music and performances, is scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m. local time (GMT+1), ahead of the 8:00 p.m. kick-off.

The Atlas Lions, led by coach Walid Regragui, enter the competition as clear favorites, bolstered by home advantage, their status as Africa’s top-ranked team, and an impressive squad featuring stars like Brahim Díaz, Youssef En-Nesyri, and Yassine Bounou. Morocco are on a remarkable 18-match winning streak and are aiming to claim their first AFCON title since 1976.

However, they face stiff competition in a stacked field. Reigning champions Ivory Coast, 2021 winners Senegal (with talents like Sadio Mané), record seven-time champions Egypt (led by Mohamed Salah), Nigeria, Algeria, and others are all strong contenders for the crown.

Comoros, appearing in just their second AFCON finals, will look to build on their surprising run to the round of 16 in 2022 and pose an early upset threat to the hosts.

The tournament, featuring 24 teams across six cities in Morocco, runs until the final on January 18, 2026, also in Rabat. With renovated stadiums and high expectations, AFCON 2025 promises thrilling action and potential surprises – as Africa’s premier football event always delivers.
