A brazen cash-in-transit (CIT) robbery unfolded on Khumalo Street in Thokoza on Saturday afternoon, leaving a 14-year-old girl injured by a stray bullet and authorities launching a manhunt for the suspects.

According to reports, a gang of armed robbers in a white Mercedes-Benz rammed an armored security cash van, forcing it to overturn. The attackers then gained access to the vehicle, making off with an undisclosed amount of cash before fleeing the scene.

A charred vehicle, believed to have been used by the robbers and possibly set alight to destroy evidence, was left abandoned next to the overturned van.

In the chaos, gunfire erupted, and a stray bullet struck the teenager. She was rushed to a nearby hospital for medical treatment. Police confirmed her injuries but provided no further updates on her condition.

South African Police Service (SAPS) spokesperson confirmed that investigations are ongoing, with specialized units involved in tracking the suspects. No arrests have been made at this stage.

Members of the public were urged to avoid Khumalo Street while the scene was processed, using alternative routes.

Cash-in-transit robberies continue to plague Gauteng, often involving high levels of violence and sophisticated tactics. Authorities have appealed for any information that could lead to the arrest of the perpetrators.

More details are expected as the investigation progresses.
