Defence counsel Dumisani Mabunda has told the Johannesburg Magistrates’ Court that slain media personality Warrick Stock, popularly known as DJ Warras, could have been killed by “anyone,” arguing that the circumstances surrounding his life expose multiple alternative suspects.

Mabunda made the submission during bail proceedings for taxi boss Victor Majola, who was arrested in connection with the murder of DJ Warras, who was shot and killed in the Johannesburg CBD last month.

Addressing the court, Mabunda submitted that the deceased should not be portrayed as blameless, alleging that DJ Warras was involved in building hijackings — a claim the defence argues places him within a dangerous criminal milieu.

“With the greatest respect, the deceased cannot be presented as an angel. It is understood that he was a building hijacker,” Mabunda told the court.

He argued that, given the alleged activities of the deceased, the possibility that DJ Warras was killed by someone else operating within that fraternity cannot be excluded.

“And him being in that field, there are many possibilities that he could have been killed by another person within that fraternity. We cannot rule that out,” Mabunda said.

The defence also sought to explain why Majola was allegedly found in possession of photographs and personal information belonging to the deceased.

Mabunda told the court that his client had already accounted for this in his affidavit.

“He has already explained in his affidavit that the documents were sent to him by his girlfriend, who intended to open an affidavit relating to a debit matter,” Mabunda said.

The bail application is expected to resume on Friday afternoon.
