Manchester United head coach Michael Carrick was quick to credit his players and staff after a memorable 2-0 derby victory over Manchester City at Old Trafford, a result that lifted the mood around the club and delighted the home supporters.

Second-half goals from Bryan Mbeumo and Patrick Chinazaekpere Dorgu secured all three points in front of an ecstatic crowd, even if the scoreline arguably flattered United on the balance of play. Nevertheless, Carrick praised the collective commitment and discipline shown by his side, particularly given the limited preparation time.

Speaking after the match to Sky Sports and MUTV, Carrick played down suggestions of chaos during his first week in charge. He described the build-up as “controlled and normal,” highlighting the professionalism of his coaching staff, backroom team and players. Despite only having three days to prepare, Carrick said the squad absorbed tactical information impressively while also managing the emotional demands of such a high-profile fixture.

Carrick was also keen to stress the importance of defensive organisation and togetherness. He felt United looked dangerous both in transition and when in possession, while the players’ work ethic and willingness to give everything embodied what he wanted to see. Although he avoided leaning too heavily on ideas of “United DNA,” Carrick admitted he could not have asked for more from his players.

The Old Trafford atmosphere also played a crucial role, with Carrick describing the stadium as “magical.” He noted the emotion felt by the players as they left the dressing room and emphasised the importance of keeping a clean sheet. According to the head coach, the energy from the stands will be used as motivation moving forward.

From a tactical perspective, Carrick highlighted the importance of compactness, short distances between units and collective movement. While paying respect to City manager Pep Guardiola, Carrick explained that United focused on playing to their own strengths, a plan he felt was executed almost perfectly.

Despite the celebrations, Carrick remained grounded. He stressed that the win was just one game and that consistency is now the key challenge. While acknowledging it was a special day worth enjoying, Carrick insisted the performance level must become the standard as United look to build momentum in the weeks ahead.

In other games Arsenal started the day with a six point lead. They ended it with seven clear of Manchester City but third placed Aston Villa will move to within four points of the top if they beat Everton today.

United are next in action against Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday, 25 January while Manchester City’s next league game. Their next Premier League game is at home to Wolves on Saturday, 24 January.
