Operations at the Rustenburg Local Municipality offices were brought to a halt earlier today after smoke was detected in two of the floors at the building.

Authorities say no injuries or casualties were reported during the incident.

“Upon detection, emergency protocols were immediately activated.

The Municipal Fire and Rescue Services, together with relevant internal departments, responded promptly to the scene.

As a precautionary measure, employees were required to evacuated to ensure the safety of employees and members of the public,” said the municipality’s acting Communications Manager, Odirile Madiba.

Furthermore, Madiba said emergency personnel are conducting assessment, adding that the situation is under control.

“Technical teams are currently conducting thorough inspections to determine the exact cause of the incident and to ensure that the building is safe for continued use.

Normal operations may be temporarily affected in certain sections of the building while assessments and remedial work are completed,” explained Madiba.

According to the acting Communications Manager, the building is compliant.

“We do have regular periodic assessments which we are meant to do because it’s a public building where we check that we’re in compliance with everything to ensure that everybody that is in the building and comes to the municipality is safe,” remarked Madiba.
