The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) have formally filed a criminal complaint against forensic investigator Paul O’Sullivan, accusing him of contempt of Parliament after he abruptly left an ad hoc committee hearing on police corruption.

The complaint was lodged at the Cape Town police station on Friday, following O’Sullivan’s dramatic exit from the session the previous day. He claimed he needed to catch a flight, walking out mid-proceeding while still under oath and refusing to continue his testimony.

National Assembly Speaker Thoko Didiza has expressed concern over the incident and is reviewing options for further action.

According to the EFF, O’Sullivan’s behavior violates the Powers, Privileges and Immunities of Parliament and Provincial Legislatures Act, as he disregarded the committee’s authority by leaving prematurely.

EFF committee member Leigh Ann Mathys highlighted the potential penalties: “Under Section 17 of the Powers and Privileges Act, contempt of Parliament is an offense that can result in fines, imprisonment, or both.”

Parliament spokesperson Moloto Mothapo echoed Didiza’s concerns, stating, “Witnesses must fully cooperate with committee proceedings and uphold Parliament’s authority.”

Mothapo added that Didiza is expecting a detailed report from the committee to decide on any necessary steps.
