Morocco Crowned AFCON 2025 Champions After Dramatic CAF Ruling

Morocco have officially been crowned champions of the Africa Cup of Nations following a dramatic and unprecedented ruling by the Confédération Africaine de Football Appeal Board, which awarded them a 3–0 victory after Senegal forfeited the final.

The AFCON 2025 final, hosted in Morocco, was played on 18 January, Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium, Rabat

in front of a packed stadium and millions watching across the continent. The highly anticipated clash between Morocco and Senegal two of Africa’s football powerhouses was expected to be a showcase of elite talent.

However, the match descended into controversy during the second half following a series of contentious refereeing decisions, VAR interventions, and growing tensions on the pitch and sidelines.

At the centre of the drama was Senegal captain Sadio Mané, who initially led protests against a key decision that went in Morocco’s favour. Reports indicate that Senegal players surrounded the referee, disputing calls that they believed were unjust.

In a moment that stunned fans, several Senegal players walked off the pitch in protest as the situation escalated. The match was temporarily halted, with officials attempting to restore order.

It was at this point that Mané stepped in to de-escalate the situation. Demonstrating leadership, he urged his teammates to return to the field and continue the match, reportedly calling them back in an effort to avoid severe disciplinary consequences.

Despite his intervention, the disruption had already crossed regulatory thresholds. CAF later determined that the conduct of the Senegal team including the temporary abandonment of play constituted a breach of Articles 82 and 84 of AFCON regulations.

Following the match, the Fédération Royale Marocaine de Football (FRMF) lodged a formal protest, arguing that Senegal’s actions amounted to misconduct serious enough to warrant forfeiture.

While the initial decision by CAF’s disciplinary structures did not fully uphold Morocco’s claim, the matter was escalated to the Appeal Board. After reviewing the case, the Board ruled in Morocco’s favour, setting aside the earlier decision and declaring Senegal to have forfeited the match.

The final result was officially recorded as a 3–0 win for Morocco.

Democratic Values in Football Governance

The ruling has been widely interpreted as a demonstration of CAF’s commitment to due process, accountability, and the rule of law values closely associated with democratic governance.

The ability of the FRMF to appeal, and for an independent body to overturn a prior decision, highlights the growing institutional maturity within African football structures.

Despite being crowned champions, Morocco’s victory comes with its own complications. CAF upheld findings of misconduct involving Moroccan player Ismaël Saibari and incidents involving ball boys, VAR-area interference, and the use of laser pointers by supporters, resulting in multiple fines and sanctions.

Still, the title stands marking Morocco’s triumph in one of the most controversial finals in AFCON history.
