Two Home Affairs Department officials have been arrested in separate corruption-related operations across KwaZulu-Natal and Mpumalanga.
In the first case, an official based at the Pinetown office in KwaZulu-Natal was arrested on Wednesday during an investigation into a fraudulent death registration. The official was allegedly caught attempting to pay a R3,000 bribe in an effort to avoid arrest.
In a second operation in Secunda, Mpumalanga, another official, together with two members of the public, was arrested for allegedly issuing smart ID cards to unqualified foreign nationals.
The Department of Home Affairs says the arrests form part of a broader drive to restore integrity and protect the country’s identity and civic systems.
Minister Leon Schreiber has indicated that the department is intensifying its anti-corruption efforts, with arrests, dismissals and disciplinary action now taking place on a near-weekly basis.
He has reaffirmed a zero-tolerance stance, warning that all officials implicated in wrongdoing will face decisive consequences.
Law enforcement authorities say further arrests remain possible as investigations continue.
