The South African Weather Service has issued a warning for cold temperatures and strong winds expected to affect large parts of South Africa from tomorrow through to Thursday.

The cold front is set to impact the Western Cape, Northern Cape and Eastern Cape first, before moving inland towards central and eastern regions.

The system may also bring snowfall to high-lying areas, particularly across parts of the Cape provinces.

Severe thunderstorms are forecast for the Free State and North West, with an increased risk of localised flooding.

Forecaster Tokelo Chiloane warned that conditions are expected to deteriorate significantly.

“By Tuesday and Wednesday, rainfall will spread into central and eastern provinces, bringing a marked increase in wet and cold conditions. Disruptive rainfall may lead to flooding in parts of the Western and Eastern Cape, while strong winds and rough seas are expected along the coastline. Snowfall is also likely in high-lying areas,” Chiloane said.

He added that severe thunderstorms are likely in the Free State and North West, where similar impacts were recorded last week.

Residents are urged to monitor updates and take necessary precautions as the weather system intensifies.
