Proceedings at the Madlanga Commission were held entirely in private on Monday after the inquiry ruled that testimony would continue behind closed doors.

A Crime Intelligence officer, known as Witness G, had initially been expected to testify partly in open session. However, early in his testimony, he indicated he could not answer most questions publicly as this could reveal his identity and endanger his life.

The session was further disrupted by technical difficulties, as Witness G testified remotely from an undisclosed location. Connectivity issues resulted in multiple adjournments within a short period.

The witness was also unable to read from his affidavit or provide detailed responses in an open setting, again citing safety concerns.

Following a prolonged delay, commission chairperson Mbuyiseli Madlanga ruled that proceedings would continue entirely in camera.

“Everything now has to be fully in camera. Otherwise, we would face repeated interruptions, which is not desirable,” Madlanga said.

It remains unclear how long Witness G’s testimony will continue.

He is expected to address matters relating to Brown Mogotsi, who previously told the commission he was also a Crime Intelligence informant.
