Health authorities in Brazil’s São Paulo state are investigating a suspected case of Ebola after a traveller who recently returned from the Democratic Republic of Congo developed symptoms associated with the disease.

Officials confirmed on Saturday that the patient, a man who had recently visited the African nation, presented with a fever after arriving in Brazil. The Democratic Republic of Congo is currently dealing with an Ebola outbreak, prompting heightened concern among health authorities.

The patient has been placed in isolation at a specialist hospital equipped to manage suspected or confirmed Ebola cases while tests are conducted to determine whether he has contracted the virus.

In a statement, health officials said monitoring and precautionary measures had been activated as part of established public health protocols. Authorities are also expected to trace any potential contacts while awaiting laboratory results.

Ebola is a severe and often fatal viral disease that spreads through direct contact with the bodily fluids of infected individuals or contaminated materials. Early symptoms typically include fever, fatigue, muscle pain and headaches.

Authorities have stressed that the case remains under investigation and that no confirmed diagnosis has yet been made.
