The FIFA World Cup group stage delivered another day of high-stakes drama on Friday as France, Spain and Belgium secured top spot in their respective groups, while several nations saw their hopes of progression come to an end.

In Group I, France underlined their status as one of the tournament favourites with a commanding 4-1 victory over Norway. The French attack proved too strong as they completed the group stage unbeaten and advanced to the Round of 32 as group winners. Norway, despite the defeat, did enough to finish second and also secured a place in the knockout rounds.

The other Group I fixture saw Senegal produce one of the performances of the day, crushing Iraq 5-0. The emphatic win boosted Senegal’s chances of advancing as one of the tournament’s best third-placed teams, while Iraq’s campaign came to a disappointing conclusion.

Spain also booked their place atop Group H after edging Uruguay 1-0 in a tightly contested encounter. A first-half strike proved decisive as La Roja controlled much of the match and held firm to secure all three points. The result eliminated Uruguay from the competition and confirmed Spain’s progression as group winners.

Cape Verde joined Spain in advancing from Group H after a goalless draw with Saudi Arabia. The point was enough to secure second place in the group, marking a historic achievement for the African nation. Saudi Arabia’s tournament ended with the stalemate.

The standout result of the day came in Group G, where Belgium dismantled New Zealand 5-1. The Red Devils produced an attacking masterclass, with their experienced stars leading the way in a dominant display. The victory ensured Belgium finished first in the group and carried significant momentum into the knockout stage.

In the group’s other match, Egypt and Iran shared the points in a 1-1 draw. Egypt’s result was enough to secure qualification for the next round, while Iran faced an anxious wait to discover whether their tally would be sufficient to advance as one of the best third-placed sides.

Friday’s results completed another crucial chapter in the expanded 48-team World Cup, with knockout places becoming clearer and dreams of lifting football’s biggest prize moving one step closer for the surviving nations.

Attention now turns to the final group-stage fixtures and the beginning of the Round of 32, where the competition is expected to intensify as the race for World Cup glory enters its decisive phase.
